Developers welcome
The big iPhone story of late is the release of the iPhone SDK. And it is this software Developers Kit that what will bring the iPhone to its true potential. With it. thousands of developers (as of press time, over 100,000 downloads in just one month) are allowed to work on applications native to the iPhone. What kind of applications remains to be seen, but the possibilities are limitless.
With the iphone’s Multi-Touch user interface, animation technology, large storage, built-in three-axis accelerometer, and geographical location technology, users can expect really cool and innovative applications very soon. In addition, enterprise clients may now develop proprietary applications customized to their organizations’ specific needs, taking advantage of ActiveSync along with the numerous security enhancements in
version 2.0.
For now, the only way to get third party applications into the iPhone is through an unofficial application simply named “Installer”. To get Installer to work, the iPhone needs to go through a process called “jailbreaking” which is not authorized by Apple. Jailbreaking is hacking into the iPhone ,and as such, your phone will be subject to many issues. For one, the iPhone is essentially exposed, since third party applications have no security certificates attached. Practically everything released is rogue to Apple, and there is a high level of blind trust involved. Whatever the case, there has yet to be a report of an iPhone crashed beyond repair by any unofficial third party app, so it’s not as bad as Apple would like us to believe. And with upcoming official Apple support for the iPhone in the Philippines, the future looks bright.
Installer, however, is a good indicator of things to come. It provides the most simple solution to application distribution and installation. We tried it out to Lest early offerings from developers. OverWi-Fi, with just a couple of taps, an application gets into the iPhone within a couple of minutes. And, despite being an unsupported platform. thousands of applications — mostly freeware
— are available. Some are inane and are created for senseless fun. There are also a number of indispensable titles such as Converter (a unit conversion tool) and SMSD (an SMS client that provides the basic functionality that Apple failed to deliver, such as forwarding).
